The Problem: The Greens Bayou is a slow moving river in Southeast Texas with a watershed covering over 200 square miles. Due to its low elevation, the watershed sometimes experiences flooding from rain events.
On August 24, 2017, as part of routine erosion control maintenance and repair, EarthGuard® Fiber Matrix™ was sprayed on a Greens Bayou project site in Houston. Vegetation had not yet been established and extreme rain was not expected.
Shortly afterward, Category 4 Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas, and just a few days later, it dumped record amounts of rainfall on the project site.
Results: EarthGuard® Fiber Matrix™ withstood the enormous volume of rain and destructive force that Hurricane Harvey unleashed on the poorly draining flat geography—performing unexpectedly well, with little erosion resulting from sheet flow erosion—even though EarthGuard® Fiber Matrix™ had only been applied as part of regular maintenance, with standard manufacture recommended application rates and a one-directional spray technique.
